Free on-line learning on a variety of subjects based around the sort of things a business needs to ensure that its employees know about. For example, there is a range of health and safety courses plus some basic IT ones including MS Office products. There’s a Business English test and the site is hoping to develop to include business management and financial skills.

There is a touch typing tutorial and some psychometric tests.

At the end of each course there is a rudimentary test and a certificate. Good for those needing to show that they have undertaken some basic health and safety training.

It’s free to individual learners and a small subscription for companies to use for their staff.

Huge resource of free articles, tools and tips covering every business management subject under the sun.

In the training section there are such subjects as the Free Micro-eMBA. You don’t actually get a degree out of the study you put in; its more for your own benefit. There is also a specific training section for non-profit organisations with titles such as

Access to various on line ITIL training courses and resources, reasonably priced and you can pay with PayPal. Some free stuff but really just a taster incentive to get you to part with your money.

Open University OpenLearn

Access to nuggets of OU course resources. Gives you a taster of what the whole course might involve. There is quite a range of subjects but none of the courses would give you much more than an overview of the subject.

The message board is a nice idea as in theory you could exchange information on the courses with fellow students but the message boards tend to turn into chat rooms and so are not that useful.

Its free so you can’t complain.

Virtual Training Company

VTC is an American company providing hundreds of courses, mainly IT related. Most of the courses last 8 to 10 hours and are split into 4 to 5 minute movies that can be viewed either in Flash or Quicktime. I’ve worked through a number of these courses and you are awarded a certificate of completion at the end of each one.

You can subscribe either monthly or annually.

A courses of particular note is the PMBOK series. Split into four and each lasting around 8 hours, it is a comprehensive course as preparation for the PMBOK certification and the units can be counted towards the training contact hours you need to be eligible to apply for the examination.

You will find both highly technical courses on data modelling, UML and programming languages to thorough but entry level courses for MS Office products or the ubiquitous ‘So you want to make a website’ offering.

Thoroughly recommended.
